East Coast Sixers, Georgetown Hitters, West Demerara Heat and Lower Corentyne Thunders were all in winner’s row yesterday in the second round of the GCB Girls U-17 T20 Franchise League.
East Coast Sixes beat East Bank Warriors by eight wickets in the morning game, in the second round of the GCB Girls U-17 T20 Franchise League at Everest yesterday. East Bank Warriors batted first in sunny conditions in a game reduced to 15 overs due to a 45-minute late start due to late arrival of the teams and reached 70-6 when their overs expired.
Extras top scored with 26 while Nadia DeSantos (14) and Shania Maglorie (10) added 30 for the second wicket after joining forces when Alexis Scott was dismissed at 4-1; hit wicket off Sarah Amin.
But no other batsman reached double figures as medium pacer Shazana Majeed captured 2-9 from her two overs. East Coast Sixes, in reply reached 74-2 in 12.1 over as Tilleya Madramootoo who hit a couple of boundaries in an unbeaten 15 and Sarah Amin who finished undefeated on 17 decorated with two fours, put together 37 in an unfinished match-winning third wicket stand.
The pair came together after Player of the Match Majeed was removed by Alexis Noel for 12 at 37-2. In the afternoon game at Everest, Georgetown Hitters made 99-9 from 20 overs with Keisha Jones reaching the boundary three times in her 22 while Naomi Barlzoye (15) Nisha Singh (11) and Shania Kingston (10) the other batsmen to reach double figures.
Mariam Telford had 2-15 and Tienaicia Solomon taking 2-12 for West Berbice Stars who were bundled out for 40 in 17.1 overs with extras top scoring with 13. Player-of-the-match Hemwattie Mohabir grabbed 3-9 while Barlzoye took 2-7.
Meanwhile, at the Young Warriors ground in Canjie, Lower Corentyne Thunders beat Essequibo Hurricanes by 33 runs. Thunders made 99-2 in a game reduced to 15 over with Ashmini Munisar hitting five fours in a top score of 41 while Crystal Durant made 12 not out and Navina Ramnauth finished unbeaten on 12.
Hurricanes, the defending Champions, were restricted to 66-5 when their overs expired despite 19 from Annalisa DeGuiar as Jamie Campbell had 2-6. In the afternoon game in Berbice, West Demerara Heat beat Upper Corentyne Strikers by 38 runs with Keshan Boodenlall making 25 and Vapine Pitamber scoring 22 to carry them to 91-2.
Upper Corentyne Strikers were bowled out for 53 with Player of the Match Boodenall taking three wickets. The games are being played with a plastic soft-ball and France Coach Micheal ‘Hyles’ Franco said that this tournament should have been played with a ‘hard ball’ like last year.
The experienced Berbice Coach also lamented that what he would have liked to have more sessions with the girls since he only had an hour to work with them on the morning of the morning of the first match.
The umpires (team officials) ignored the time out law and the no-ball law for balls bouncing more than twice. The final preliminary round is set for tomorrow with Hurricanes facing Sixers from 09:00hrs and Stars battling Heat from 13:00hrs at Lusignan while Strikers oppose Hitters from 09:00hrs and Warriors coming up against Thunders at Young Warriors from 13:00hrs.
The two top teams collide in Monday’s final at Bourda from 10:00hrs.
