First Lady honours “outstanding” STEM Guyana Team

For their excellent performance at the recent First Global Robotics Challenge, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, on Wednesday lauded the STEM Guyana team at a reception in the Baridi Benab at State House.

Fifteen year old Kyle Dos Santos, who is the youngest members of the STEM Guyana team receives his plaque and tablet from Minister of Public Telecommunications, Mrs. Catherine Hughes.

The team won the Albert Einstein Gold Medal for Excellence in the competition and placed 39th out of 195 participating countries.
In her address at the reception, the First Lady said she never doubted the team’s ability to succeed. In fact, Mrs. Granger said their performance was quite remarkable, especially since STEM Guyana only began exposing young people in Guyana to robotics in 2016.
“For me it is doubly important that notwithstanding all the challenges they faced, that they were able to achieve this, which is an award that recognises not only their technical capacity but also the fact that they were good representatives of their country, good team players, strategic thinkers and that they were able to be flexible,” Mrs. Granger said.
The First Lady thanked all of the sponsors for throwing their support behind the team.
Meanwhile, co-founder of STEM Guyana, Ms. Karen Abrams, commended the First Lady for the support she is giving to the organisation.
“None of this would have been possible had the First Lady not shown tremendous vision back in 2016 … Since then she has been a fearless advocate, a partner and a strong pillar of support for STEM Guyana,” Ms. Abrams said.
Additionally, Minister of State, Mrs. Dawn Hastings-Williams and Minister of Public Telecommunications, Mrs. Catherine Hughes, who also attended the event, presented a plaque and Tablet to each team member in recognition of their outstanding performance.
Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry and Director of Sport, Mr. Christopher Jones also attended the reception.
