Speeding accounted for 75 percent of road accidents for the first half of this year. This was revealed by Traffic Chief, Superintendent Linden Isles, who said that police will be continuing awareness campaigns on how to use the roadways to drivers.
He said, “We, police officers, continue to tell drivers and persons using the roadways not to speed. But they are not listening…However, [we will] continue to enforce our laws so as to protect innocent civilians who are usually caught in the middle of these tragic accidents.”
“Seventy-five percent of road accidents are caused by speeding and drunk driving. Drivers refused to observe the speed limit when using the road. Even though we continued to tell them not to use drugs or alcohol when driving, not to play loud music in the minibuses, not to be rude to passengers; these drivers continue to practise this kind of lawlessness,” the Traffic Chief lamented.
Last Thursday, another lecture session was conducted at the Traffic Department at Brickdam Police Station. Like the others, this session was aimed at educating road operators to practise road safety.
The operators were encouraged to practise healthy behaviour and habits. They were also told that the police force has a zero tolerance for operators allowing schoolchildren to “bus ride.”
According to reports, 85 persons have been killed in road accidents already for 2019. This is a significant increase for the same period last year. Investigations have revealed that most of these accidents were caused by speeding.
