After weeks of acquiring funds through SMS and Mobile Money Guyana (MMG) to assist those affected by hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, GTT has accumulated close to $130,000 through the two platforms.
The company’s Public Relations and Corporate Communication Manager, Jasmin Harris, handed over the cheque to Anita Layne, Project Manager (ag), of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) at its Thomas Lands location.
“The company is happy to contribute, through the kind donations of the public, to the relief efforts being championed by the CDC. We are pleased that our products assisted in fundraising for a worthy cause,” Harris remarked.
Layne expressed gratitude to GTT for its effort to amass the monies. “I am thankful to GTT and all the other private, public and non-governmental organisations which have partnered with us in supporting the Bahamas after being impacted by Hurricane Dorian.”
“We trust that our contributions will go a far way in helping the country rebuild and recover from the devastation caused from that natural disaster. The CDC is in the process of consolidating all the resources raised and will be coordinating an official handing over to the Government of Bahamas shortly,” Layne noted.
On September 1, Dorian, a Category Five hurricane ripped through the small Caribbean archipelago with winds near 240 kilometres per hour (150 miles per hour). Hurricane Dorian claimed the lives of 65 persons on the island and was deemed the strongest hurricane on record to affect the Bahamas.
