The 59th National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track & Field Championships were launched yesterday at the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) Secretariat, Woolford Avenue. In attendance were representatives from the Ministry of Education (MoE), GTU and sponsors of the event.
During remarks, General Secretary of the GTU, Coretta McDonald made it clear that there will be no time wasting in this year’s event. She noted that last year’s final day of the championships went into the wee hours of the night due to a lot of time that was delayed but she alerted those in attendance that there will not be a repeat of such in the November 17-21 championship.
“If an athlete’s name is called twice and he/she is not there, that athlete will be disqualified,” McDonald noted. Chief Education Officer (CEO) Marcel Hutson during his address explained that the National Schools’ Championships, “Cultivates skills that are critical to leadership, in addition to nurturing talent.”
Troy Peters, Communications Manager of marquee sponsor; Banks DIH, related that, “We are anxious and eagerly awaiting just like the competitors for the competition to get underway. Our package this year will include Malta Supreme, Rainforest Waters, midtown cookies and crackers, Icee, and Demico Ice cream because we want the youths to know about quality products that are produced locally.”
NCN and Hits & Jams (HJ) TV & Radio are also supporting the event. Aaliyah Rodriquez of HJ briefly noted that, “Sport is a form of entertainment but it also promotes and has many physical and psychological advantages, so we at HJ were pleased to support the event when we were approached.”
In concluding the ceremony, it was revealed that the 59th Schools’ Championships will be one of the biggest since H.E. President David Granger has become a Patron of the event that see over 1500 athletes participating.
The swimming championships will be held at the National Aquatic Center in Lilliendaal while the Cycling Championships will be at its usual venue; the National Park, with the anticipated Track & Field competition set for the National Track & Field Center (NTFC) in Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
