Overseas-based Guyanese Ashraf Ali, AKA ‘the River Conqueror, for his exploits of swimming all of the major Rivers in Guyana and also swimming over seven miles into the Atlantic Ocean is undertaking other feats to assist unfortunate resident in his homeland.
Ali, 73, a former Science and Mathematics teacher, now a pastor, lived most of his life in Canefield, East Canje, Berbice Guyana.
Now living in the USA, Ali would return home on a regular basis to undertake feats that would benefit his home country.
Earlier in the year, he established a youth centre in Canefield, East Canje, to teach youths various subjects including computering, free of cost.
During his recent visit back home a week ago, he organised the youths at the centre to start a clean-up project in his native Canefield Village.
He stated, “There is a clean-up system in place but it needs lots of improvement.”
The club formed by the children is called the CISTA GIRL CLUB. This club has a parent club in New York consisting of girls between the ages of 8-18years. The Global Mission of the club is: CISTA GIRLS LEADING THE WAY TO SAVE THE PLANET.
According to Ali, ‘God Willing’, the CISTA GIRLS from New York will travel to Guyana to work together with the Guyanese children. One of the objectives is to formulate a strategy to improve the System of garbage disposal that is presently in place.
He said that the overseas contingent intend to work along and show the greatest of respect to the leaders and officials who are in charge of promoting a clean environment in the country.
He said that the group is willing to share tips on educating the community on how to build a stronger relationship between man and the environment.
“Among some of the activities undertaken by the group are beach clean-ups. Science fairs, host TV shows, spelling bee competitions, recycling projects, library presentations.”
Members of the club are provided free training for projects and programmes that enhance their personal and professional lives, such as leaders, writers, public speakers, organisers among others.
Ali’s aim is that the CISTA GIRLS projects and programmes will inspire girls and women of all ages to become better persons the world over.
