Mr. Robert Persaud, the former Minister of Natural Resources and executive member of the PPPC had cause to make a statement to the media that “he will rejoin when I think I can play a role back in politics that is of value-added significance.” And where will he be called to make this value-added significance? Is it in the APNU or PPPC since he said he is not forming a new party? And what new does he bring to the table?
I want to remind the PPPC that many of us second-time voters who voted for the APNUAFC in 2015 did so with a clear reason; we had no faith in Team Ramotar. People like Robert Persaud were key players in that group, so what difference will they create today?
He was the Campaign Manager who reportedly rejected his presidential candidate and made approaches to the other side even before Mr. Ramotar left the Office of the President to become a private citizen. We see that as opportunistic, disloyal and treacherous.
The records show that immediately after the PPPC lost power, Mr. Ashni Singh, Ms. Carolyn Rodrigues, and Mr. Robert Persaud all abandoned that party. How can these people ever be trusted today? Firstly, they served in a failed cabinet and brought great hardship to the people in 2014 and 2015. Secondly, when put to the test they abandoned their party at the drop of a hat. So why should there be a place today for any one of these three persons on the PPPC slate?
Our first instinct for March 2020 was Mr. Lenox Shuman. He made sense to us that he was going to be a credible balance of power. But then he got into talks with the APNU+AFC and threw away that trust. The other small parties so far are all splinters from the APNU+AFC and can be classified as a bunch of opportunists and thus they shall find no merit with us.
All of that said, we salute the PPPC for trying something new, a non-Hindu, non-traditional leader, backed, hopefully by a former Army General. This is something new for us to seriously consider. But then Robert Persaud spoke and then we were reminded of all the gold scams and oil-block scams and we are back to square one. Mr. Irfaan Ali has to speak to us – will he be putting Robert Persaud on his list? If so we are not on board.
We do not trust the APNU+AFC since they lied to us. We cannot trust Mr. Shuman since he is in talks with the APNU+AFC and the other third force options are not an option since they are all splinters of the APNU+AFC. But a PPPC with Ministers like Carolyn Rodrigues, Robert Persaud and Ashni Singh back in the fold is more of the same old team which reminds us of the meaning of insanity – using the same team to do the same things over and over and expecting a different outcome.
If the PPPC chooses to go with Mr. Robert Persaud, Mr. Ashni Singh and Ms. Carolyn Rodrigues as PPPC candidates then they will be telling us clearly that they are an insane group and do not care about our concerns. We are not insane and in such a situation, we will stay away from the elections unless another SHUMAN type pops up.
