The Adelphi resident who is accused of badly beating his elderly mother and rendering her unconscious has been charged with attempted murder.
Totoram Lalta, called “Elmo”, 35, of 15 First Street, Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice is accused of attempting to kill his 75-year-old mother, Gagnarinee Lalta, on Monday October 14 at their Canje home.
He appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and was remanded to jail.
The case for the prosecution as presented by Corporal Winston Poliah is that the elderly woman lives with her son, who is said to be a drug addict. Around 06:30 hrs on the day the question, the man and his elderly mother got involved in another misunderstanding and he reportedly began assaulting her.
He held onto her hair, rocked her head and slapped her across her face. The blow caused the woman to fall and strike her head on the concrete floor.
The woman was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was treated and transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she remains warded in the Intensive Care Unit in a critical condition.
The matter was reported and the police responded promptly. The culprit tried to escape, but the police, with the help of residents, were able to apprehend him.
Lalta admitted to beating the woman, but told investigators that he did not know why he did it.
He was remanded to jail until November 27.
The matter has been transferred to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court for continuation.
