Police in Springlands, Berbice have arrested a 33-year-old hire car driver for his involvement in a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred at Number 76 Village, Upper Corentyne Saturday afternoon.
In police custody, along with his car, is Yadesh Rooplall. The victim of the accident has been identified as Parmanand Harripaul, an unemployed 27-year-old of Lot 62 Section A Number 69 Village.
Police sources have since indicated that Rooplall was arrested yesterday morning in Line Path, Skeldon, while the vehicle he was driving was found at a bodywork and spray paint establishment in Crabwood Creek around 21:00 hrs Saturday. The incident reportedly took place Saturday afternoon.
Reports are that the police acted on information given by an anonymous caller that a body of a male was on the parapet of the Number 76 public road.
Upon the ranks’ arrival, they saw blood on the victim’s neck and torso along with a gash on his neck. Small fragments of glass were also noticed about three feet away from the body.
Subsequently, contact was made with Leelawattie Hemraj, who identified the body to be that of her son. The body was transported to Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body is at Skeldon Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
Meanwhile, a relative of the deceased, Chetram Harry, told Kaieteur News that his nephew left home Saturday afternoon but did not say where he was heading.
It was not long after that they were informed by the police that Harripaul’s lifeless body was found on the road. He had no children and was never married.
Investigations are ongoing.
