USA-based Guyanese businessman, Thakur Parsaram, is the latest victim to be allegedly outsmarted by a Berbician conman in a supposed speed boat engine sale deal that reportedly went sour.
Thakur Parsaram of Best Road, West Bank Demerara, told this publication that some six months ago, he entered into an agreement to sell a 30-horse power and 9.9 horse power engine to a close associate, Shawn Smith, called ‘Rastaman’ of New Amsterdam, Berbice.
He said ‘Rastaman’ had collected the speedboat engines and had promised to return with the cash the following day after selling off the engines to a buyer he claimed was ready and waiting.
Parsaram said after two days of hearing nothing from the man, he attempted to contact him by cellular phone, but could not get him at the number provided.
He said it took him weeks before he finally managed to track down Smith who had no explanation as to what had happened to the boat engines or the cash he was supposed to provide for the sale.
Parsaram said he thereafter called in the police at New Amsterdam, who arrested Smith and took him in custody.
He said he and Smith then made a written contract in the presence of the police to pay the cash owed ($620,000) in a two months period.
He said Smith thereafter never made an attempt to pay him. Many attempts to clarify what occurred with the police were met with frivolous explanation.
Yesterday, the police were contacted at New Amsterdam and a rank there merely responded that the matter was still under investigation.
However, investigations revealed that Parsaram was not a first time victim, since Smith had outsmarted several other persons in and around the community and had made off with large amounts of cash as well and other valuable articles as well.
