A total of 19 persons were arrested on Saturday between 04:30hrs and 08:30hrs, when police officers swooped down on three East Bank Demerara villages and raided several homes.
The homes were located at Diamond, Grove, and Craig.
The raid lasted for four hours and led to the arrest of several persons of interest for various offences.
In an invited comment on the issue, Region Four (Demerara –Mahaica) EBD Sub-Division Commander, Kurleigh Simon, stated that his division has been receiving several complaints from concerned residents about the high rate of criminal activities that have been occurring in these villages.
He further added, “Citizens have the right to feel safe in their homes and communities. The three villages that we have already raided are just our starting point. We will be carrying out more of these activities in the coming weeks.”
Residents of the Grove community have been lodging complaints to the community’s police station about persons who are known to be criminals in the area loitering late at nights. Persons are also selling drugs in the area.
Commander Simon who recently took up the position of running the police stations along the EBD stated that residents should brace themselves for a safer community because he will be assigning more police patrol vehicles to roam the affected areas at night set, so as to ensure that no illegal activities will be carried out under his nose.
“The Christmas season is approaching very fast and people will come out to shop. As a Divisional Commander, I want these people to feel safe and I will do whatever it takes. I want to ensure that when persons return from shopping, they will not be robbed,” he further added.
