This year 67 youths from the hinterland regions are being awarded scholarships to attend various technical institutes in coastal Guyana.
This adds to the 49 scholarships that were granted last year to hinterland students to attend the University of Guyana.
From this year’s awardees, 13 will be students at the Government Technical Institute (GTI), 12 at the Carnegie School Home of Economics (CSHE), and four at the Burrowes School of Art.
Nearly two dozen of these students will be furthering studies at the Government Industrial Training Centre (GITC) and 17 at the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA).
This year’s scholarships are being funded by the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs. Last year’s scholarships were funded through a collaboration between Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs and the Public Service Department.
The full scholarships constitute the students’ accommodations, meals, transportation, stipend and assistance with materials needed for the school term.
The students will be housed at the commissioned Hinterland Student Dormitory located in Liliendaal, which was commissioned at $186M in July of this year.
In the opening of the dormitory just months ago, the President, David Granger, highlighted that hinterland students have been among the beneficiaries of some 1,599 tertiary level scholarships that were being offered by the Department of Public Information since 2015.
Access to education for hinterland students is being facilitated through the Government-supported scholarships which entail the privilege of hinterland students to benefit from secondary as well as tertiary education.
