Yesterday, three Surinamese drivers arrived for the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) ‘1320 Heat Rematch’ Drag Race event which is set for tomorrow at South Dakota Circuit’s Drag Strip that had rehabilitative works completed earlier in the week.
Three of the Surinamese cars about to cross over to Guyana yesterday, ahead of tomorrow’s 1320 heat rematch.
The Surinamese’ return was highly anticipated after missing out on the last two rounds inclusive of the International Meet in August, which saw the strip record being reset, mainly due to the out-of-service Guyana/Suriname ferry service.
Jalimsing Ajay and his Honda s2000 are in Guyana, along with usual suspects Raymond John and Michael Namchand with his Toyota RX7. GMR&SC President Rameez Mohamed, in a correspondence to the media noted that, “The word from the drivers is that they are here to hush the Guyanese. Suriname has always supported our events, it was quite unfortunate the ferry was down for such a long time which hindered them travelling to Guyana, but they are here now and are ready to thrill the Guyanese. I really think this will be a great way to close out the drag racing events for the year, and build good interest ahead of the massive November meet,” Mohamed expressed.
Meanwhile, the promised works on the drag strip ahead of this event have been completed. Following the ‘1320 Heat’ in August, there was some talk of fixing the ‘bump’ on the track and that has been completed on Thursday.
According to reports, the cost of leveling the bump cost approximately $4,000,000 but the club secured donors who were able to meet the cost. Additionally, GMR&SC and the Rotary Club of Demerara have teamed up to make a positive impact in October, the month that is designated globally towards cancer awareness.
The two organisations plan to donate 10% of the gate receipts to the Beacon Foundation to assist with care and treatment of cancer patients. General admission tickets cost $1,000 each, VIP $4,000 each; children Under 10 would be admitted free.
