Woman, who was set ablaze by lover, succumbs
About one month ago Olivia Defreitas of North Sophia, Georgetown was doused with a mixture of gasoline and kerosene and set alight by her boyfriend, Wazim Perreira. She has since succumbed due to complications resulting from the injuries she sustained.
Olivia Defreitas has succumbed to complications resulting from the burns she sustained.
According to a relative, Defreitas died last Thursday (October 10, 2019) at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Based on a post mortem report released Wednesday (October 16, 2019), Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, revealed that the woman died as a result of septic burns.
It was reported on September 10 last that Defreitas was involved in an argument with her boyfriend. It was during the argument that the incensed boyfriend reportedly doused her with flammable liquid before setting her alight.
The woman’s screams were heard by neighbours who came to her rescue. They dealt Perreira several blows about his body and apprehended him until the police arrived.
Defreitas was then rushed to the GPHC where she was treated for second degree burns to her face, neck and abdomen.
Perreira was later charged and remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
