The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT), as the main advocate for the country’s Pinktober, cancer awareness initiative, has also hosted activities within the company to increase knowledge among its staff.
“GTT employs almost one percent of our population; that’s a significant number – and a prime place to start by making any impact,” said Jasmin Harris, Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager at GTT.
“Our staff has been actively involved in all of the outreach events during Pinktober and we thank them for their spirit of volunteerism,” Harris added.
Among the internal activities was a decorating competition as hosted by GTT’s Social Activities Committee (SAC). Ten departments decorated their office doors to depict his year’s cancer awareness theme – ‘Live aware and show we care.’
“It is more than just words – our people are encouraged to actively demonstrate awareness and caring – for self and for others,” Harris explained.
GTT’s Call Centre Department was the winner of the internal competition. The Executive and Security Department tied for second place, while the Service Center and Marketing and Public Relations team placed third.Among the other departments participating was the Finance, Commercial, Human Resource and Customer Experience Departments and a team from the Linden GTT outlet.
“This competition is just one way of showing our interest in driving cancer awareness among the staff. Our Pinktober team is doing a great job in the community and this initiative is just another outlet to complement their efforts,” said GTT’s SAC President, Michelle Evans.
Evans noted that the SAC will continue to be part of GTT’s Pinktober activities with other internal events scheduled. “This will be our way of acknowledging those persons living with cancer and encouraging others to aim for early detection,” Evans added.
GTT’s staff will partake in “Wear it Pink” today, and all staff members encouraged to wear something pink.
“It’s beyond the colour – it is a tangible reminder to get checked, to honour the survivors and remember those we have lost,” Evans stated.
