For the first time in Guyana’s football history, two youth teams have reached the final of a senior football tournament, Fruta Conquerors Football Club and Santos Football Club Under-20 teams will contest the final of the 4th annual Limacol tournament at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground, this Sunday.

During a press conference yesterday at the MOE venue, Troy Mendonca, one of the organisers of the event, expressed delight with seeing the two youth teams making the final and he noted: “This is the future of Guyana’s football and it looks ripe.” He also stated that the third place playoff between Riddim Squad and Pele, the losing semi finalists via kicks from the penalty mark, will be an action packed fixture.
Skipper of Santos, Marcus Wilson, shared during the press brief that, “Sunday we have business to complete, we know it won’t be an easy match, we have to put our best foot forward. The last time we played Fruta we came out on top but we can’t have any lapse in concentration because they will punish us.”
Captain of Conquerors, Nicholas McArthur who missed their semifinal match because of a niggle in his ankle, is back and he is looking to continue his impressive goal scoring form.
McArthur related: “We (Fruta Conquerors) will set a new game plan for Sunday because this is a different and better team. Everyone in our squad knows the roles they have to do… My strength is back and I am looking to continue my good goal scoring form and bring it home for my team, my family and the community.”
The winners of the tournament will cash in on $400,000, second place will cart off $200,000 while the winner of the third place playoff will receive $100,000 and the fourth place finishers, $50,000. The event is also supported by W.J. Enterprise through their Croxley paper brand.
