The victims, who were hospitalized following a minibus accident on the Essequibo Coast, are all in a stable condition.
Following the accident last Thursday, five persons were admitted to the Suddie Public Hospital. The driver of the minibus was admitted in an unconscious state.
When Kaieteur News visited the Hospital last Friday all of the victims were in a conscious and stable condition. The Driver, Jerome Batson had regained consciousness and is presently in a stable condition without any major injuries.
Last Thursday Batson lost control of the minibus he was driving and collided with a light pole along the Dunkeld Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Kaieteur News understands that the driver attempted to overtake a motor lorry laden with logs, when he lost control of the minibus.
The bus, with licence plate BYY 1179, collided with the light pole, cutting it down in the process before coming to rest on its right side.
Residents managed to flip the bus back on its wheels, before pulling the passengers, most of whom where school children and teachers, from the wreck.
All of the victims were rushed to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital in Charity, before being taken to the Suddie Public Hospital. Parents of some of the hospitalized students, who spoke with this publication last Friday, said that they are happy that their children are still alive.
They did note, however, that they are dissatisfied with the Region’s poor health management programme. One parent told Kaieteur News, “when we gone down at the hospital in Charity Thursday they had ambulance but they had no driver. They had to send an ambulance all the way from Suddie to Charity to carry the children back to Suddie.”
The parents believe that better systems should be implemented which will allow the health department to improve its response during emergencies.
