The chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) have revealed that seven female prisoners are awaiting trial for murder at the Georgetown assizes of which one of them Brenda Ferreira, is mentally challenged.
On August 25, 2018, the community of Foulis, East Coast Demerara was plunged into a state of shock at news that Ferreira stabbed her three-year-old son to death.
Ferreira, 26, a housewife of 585 15th Street, Foulis, East Coast Demerara, according to eyewitnesses, was seen running behind her son, three-year-old Ramdeo Mahadeo, with a knife in her hand. Eyewitnesses also claim to have seen the woman thrusting the knife repeatedly into the child’s back.
The police responded promptly, and the child was found in a bloodied state, lying on a bed in the small wooden structure they call home. The ranks that responded, immediately rushed the child to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where valiant attempts were made to save the child’s life, but unfortunately the child succumbed.
Beverly Persaud, 46, is accused of the September 10, 2015 murder of her husband Nathan Persaud. She along with an alleged hit man Oswald Yaw, has been jointly charged with the man’s murder. Particulars of the charge alleged that on the day in question at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, they murdered Persaud in pursuant of an agreement.
As part of the agreement, Beverly Persaud promised Yaw money, as inducement for him to consider causing the death.
Beverly Persaud was arrested and interrogated by police hours after her husband was killed. She reportedly confessed to orchestrating the plot to end the life of her estranged spouse. Yaw, the suspected hit man, reportedly confessed to beating Nathan Persaud to death with a hammer. He allegedly confessed to police that the blockmaker’s wife had contracted him and had promised him $1.7M to do the gruesome job.
According to reports, the lifeless body of the 42-year-old blockmaker was found lying face down in the living room of his Lot 66 Herstelling home. His body bore a stab wound to his chest and the back of his head was bashed in.
Meanwhile, Angela Khan, 42, of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara is to be tried for the August 2014 murder of her friend 37-year-old Bharrat Sugrim whom she is alleged to have stabbed to death.
Reports indicate that Khan and her reputed husband, Dhaniram Vijay Seewah, were embroiled in a heated argument which eventually led to a fight. Sugrim, who had visited the couple’s home, attempted to intervene as a peacemaker when he was reportedly stabbed once to the region of the heart. The incident reportedly occurred on the verandah of the couple’s home, and the wounded man went to use the outhouse where he eventually collapsed.
Meanwhile, Alexis Turpin, 35, formerly of Lodge, Georgetown is to face a judge and jury for the July 2016 murder of Sherwin Johnson. The woman, along with her lover Stephon Barlow is jointly charged with the killing. It was alleged that they had used a crowbar to unlawfully and maliciously wound Johnson, with whom the woman shared a child, on July 2, 2016. He later succumbed in hospital.
Mandy Sukhdeo, 28, a former Region Three AFC councilor is accused of the February 14, 2017 murder of fisherman Shereffudeen Nazamudeen, who was beaten to death. It was previously reported that Nazamudeen, 22, of Lot 117 Ruby, East Bank Essequibo, was beaten to death by Sukdeo and two others, after he allegedly attempted to snatch a handbag belonging to her.
