What do you get when an Interventional Cardiologist and a Dental Surgeon decide to partner? While there may not be one standard answer, what is indeed fact, is that when Dr. Mahendra Carpen, an Interventional Cardiologist, and Dr. Rhonda Joseph, a Dental Surgeon, decided to team-up, the outcome was Caring Hands Healthcare Inc.
Caring Hands Healthcare Inc. is essentially a homecare service, complete with qualified doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, patient care assistants, physiotherapists and other professionals. It caters to patients after discharge from hospital.
Interesting enough, the fruition of Caring Hands Healthcare Inc., is the realization of a dream of both Drs. Carpen and Joseph. In delivering remarks at its official opening Friday evening at the Strategic Recruitment Solutions building, Camp Street, Georgetown, Dr. Carpen shared the premise for his involvement in such an undertaking.
He recounted that back in 2015 his mother suffered a stroke and was hospitalized. While accessing the necessary healthcare services was no big deal, he recalled being faced with the daunting challenge of finding proper homecare after she was discharged.
“I can imagine, and I know how difficult it is for people who have no idea how to deal with sick relatives,” said Dr. Carpen, who revealed that for this very reason he saw the need for the introduction of an organisation like Caring Hands Healthcare Inc.
“Putting together a service that can now help transition patients from hospital back to a functional state through appropriate homecare has always been a need in Guyana. To some extent there are some rudimentary programmes that are available but it is now our job to take it to the next level,” Dr. Carpen asserted.
It is therefore his expectation that with the introduction of this facility, “no Guyanese family with a sick relative should feel that sense of hopelessness, desperation and anxiety that comes with having a sick relative dependent on them.”
According to Dr. Carpen, the intent of Caring Hands Healthcare Inc, is to create a service and protocol that caters to patients being able to move freely, seamlessly and with as little stress as possible from hospital to home.
He is optimistic, too, that this would not only be “just for a short term period but a long term period that allows them to stay out of hospital.”
This is particularly important, he added, since research suggests that patients who receive more care outside of the hospital setting are less likely to be patients in the hospital.
Speaking specifically to his expertise, Dr. Carpen said that in the area of heart failure, “having professionals help patients at home (with) what to eat, how to eat, how to exercise, how to take your medication, when to take them, when to check your weight, how much fluid you should take; all of these things are part and parcel of how we manage patients at home so that they come less to hospitals.”
Dr. Carpen noted that Caring Hands Healthcare Inc., services will be offered by an all-Guyanese staff.
“We are very proud of the team we have put together to bring this service from an idea to reality.”
The organisation has also benefited from some other crucial support, for which Dr. Joseph is especially grateful.
She disclosed Friday that “our mission is to become the premier staffing and homecare company in Guyana with emphasis on providing the right care at the right time and in the most ethical and professional matter.”
Currently, the institution is operating with a provisional permit as it awaits full licensing from the Ministry of Public Health.
The fledgling homecare institution has already partnered with the privately operated St Joseph Mercy Hospital to make available continuity of care to all of its patients.
Calling it a structured and organized service, the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Ayesha Wilburg, said that “together with Caring Hands, St Joseph Mercy Hospital will work to manage all care delivery and strive to ensure quality health is provided to our patients.”
In fact she anticipates that the support of the homecare organisation will help the hospital to improve its standards.
