Seventy-four-year-old Drupattie Harpaul, called “Doreen”, a Watermelon vendor of Miss Pheobe, Port Mourant was on Friday night attacked by three armed and masked bandits.
Harpaul is currently nursing a gash to the forehead after one of the men armed with a gun in one hand hit her to the forehead with a crowbar that he held in the other hand.
Leena Harpaul, the grand-daughter, said she was sitting in the bottom flat enclosure when two masked men barged in. Both, she said, were armed with cutlasses. She disclosed that one of the men ran to the bathroom while the other kept the cutlass pointed at her but turned away to look outside.
“When he turn outside me pull he foot fuh he fall down but then the next one come out back from the bathroom and lash me in my head with the cutlass and like me get blackout.”
By that time another man armed with a gun and crow-bar had confronted her grand-mother who was in the hammock.
With a bandaged forehead, Drupattie Harpaul relayed that she was in her hammock in the bottom flat of her home while her grand-daughter was in the kitchen area. Her son and his wife were in the upper flat.
“I was in the hammock watching series on my phone and then me feel somebody deh at the back of me. Dem grab my phone and then me ask who is you? Why you grab my phone? Me na realise was bandit. Then the man said he is a bandit and then start ask for money and gold,” she recalled.
By that time two other masked men held up her grand-daughter, Leena Harpaul, a University of Guyana Berbice Campus student, in the kitchen.
The pensioner said she was not aware that her grand-daughter was held up by bandits but the armed gunman who took her phone told her not to scream. Harpaul, however, defied his demands and was bashed to the forehead with the crowbar he also had with him.
“After me get the lash, blood start fuh fall plenty, plenty and me na know what to do and me start holler and then he left me so me get up from the hammock and run to the fence and start holler fuh dem neighbours,” she said.
It was while she was screaming to alert neighbours that the men ran upstairs where her son and daughter-in-law had already secured themselves. The men were unsuccessful in gaining entry to the upper flat and eventually escaped. They only managed to steal three cellular phones.
Meanwhile, police sources have since confirmed that two persons have been arrested. Investigations are ongoing.
