With the agenda to alleviate child hunger and increase the rates of school attendance in communities marred by poverty, Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. boosted the government’s school feeding programme, on Thursday, through a handing over of 10 Nutritional Feeding Centres to the Region Two Department of Education.
Occurring at the Riverstown Primary School, Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. Chief Executive Officer, Kent Vincent, officially handed over the kitchenettes to the DOE’s representative, Shaundell Hercules.
Stating their commitment to the growth and development of children and the education sector, Mr. Vincent stated that FFP will continue to support the initiatives such as the Hot Meal programme and are hopeful for future fruitful collaborations with the Department of Education.
Ms. Hercules thanked FFP for the continued contribution to strengthening the feeding programme and school system.
“I know it will significantly benefit our children and we are looking forward to more collaborations with Food for the Poor,” said Hercules.
The Nutritional Feeding Centres are complete with kitchen, sink, cupboards and an area for the preparation of meals.
Some of the other schools that benefited from this initiative taken by FFP are Lima Sands Primary, Lake Capoey Primary, Bethany Primary, Better Hope Primary, 8th May Primary, Hampton Court Primary, Fisher Primary, Queenstown Primary and St. Johns Primary.
Over 1300 students enrolled in the ten schools will benefit directly from this initiative.
Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. also has its own school feeding programme that began in 2005. During the last school term, approximately 360 students benefitted from daily nutritious meals in Regions Two, Four and Ten.
It is currently running the feeding programme in the Sophia Primary School where there has been a noticeable increase in daily attendance.
