Head Coach of the ‘Golden Jaguars’, Brazilian Marcio Maximo remains confident ahead of his team’s upcoming fixture against Antigua and Barbuda which is set for October 11 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Group ‘C’ of the Concacaf Nations League.
Jamaica are leading the group on six points while the Golden Jaguars are in second place on three points ahead of Antigua and Barbuda also on three points and Aruba who are yet to register a point.
The squad is currently preparing for this fixture at the Guyana Football Federation National Training Centre, Providence. Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday Coach Maximo said he is positive his players can generate a win in this encounter.
“We hope to qualify and show what we have achieve in a short period, the players are very committed, there is no lateness and absence and the entire coaching staff is happy because of the commitment shown by the players,” he added.
“The players should be able to analyse the condition, we are training daily so we can minimise the gap between the local and overseas players, now fifty percent of the squad is local players which is a great achievement. We want to build a new mentality and to prepare them for international markets. We are working on their physical and technical condition and the players have shown improvement,” Maximo noted.
he also posited that it is important for the level of the game here to grow: “We want to create the foundation not only for national teams but for clubs as well. The aim is to develop football here and build the national team, and 50 percent of local players is a good achievement for me. We are second in the group; we have four more games to play so hopefully we will qualify.”
The Golden Jaguars defeated Aruba 1-0 and lost for Jamaica Reggae Boyz 4-0 in their two matches so far. (Zaheer Mohamed)
