It has recently been observed that Guyanese are going through an oil craze, however I’m here to ascertain that our country needs God more than oil. The talk of oil is at every street corner, bus park and every house. Word about the oil riches that our country is about to be flooded with is on everyone’s tongue; however, it is my belief that Guyana needs prayers more than oil money. We currently have high suicide rates; crime is on the rise and because of the uncertainty of our government we are experiencing a decline in businesses. Many households are without food in their pots and though it may seem like money is the problem, it’s much more than that.
Wealth won’t solve the economic and social depression our country is currently experiencing. Stability can only be achieved when we are satisfied with ourselves internally. Too many people are committing suicide, abusing drugs, and feeling hopeless because they lack the experience to deal with these problems. We are stuck in an age of social media comparisons, but how can we enjoy money when all we do is compare ourselves to others. This dissatisfaction is so great. These problems can only be fixed by taking away all the comparisons and finding contentment with one’s self and life. They can only be fixed by increasing our spirituality this means having a personal relationship with the Almighty. A wise person once said, “with great wealth comes great responsibility”, something Guyanese should be preparing for. It is evident that countries that discovered oil and have been thrown into newfound wealth have suddenly lost their people to the evils that follow. Greed, corruption, drug use, gambling and immoral behaviour are major factors that deteriorate society. These are voids that cannot be filled with money but can only be fixed with spiritual enlightenment that can only be found in God. When will people realize that this world is temporary, and our destination lies in our good thoughts and deeds? Guyanese need to focus more on their personal relationship with God, increase their good deeds and find contentment in the lives that we all live and enjoy. Simple words like contentment, kindness and gratitude are no longer in our vocabularies.
It is therefore my belief that oil money won’t make our nation happy. It won’t fix the problems that Guyanese are facing and it most certainly won’t help with solving the current issues unless we fix our inner demons, teach our young people how to deal with their worries and problems. And treat each other with respect and kindness.
Thank You!
