A few months ago, I visited GTT’s office in the Fogarty Building to pay my landline and DSL bills. All four chairs used by cashiers were occupied. The cashiers themselves had bright smiles and were greeting the customers warmly and the customer line was moving quickly. It was amazing and I began to wonder as to the reason for this transformation. Then I noticed a Caucasian man standing at the back of the Cashier Enclosure just observing how the cashiers were performing their duties.
Aha! I thought to myself – one Caucasian guy has performed a miracle at GTT. He achieved what numerous Guyanese complainants have failed to do.
Sadly, he has not shown up during any of my subsequent visits, the latest being last Monday and that wonderful experience is now just a distant but fond memory.
Last Monday, I requested time off from work to pay bills at GTT. I joined the line which was not very long, because I saw there were two cashiers – one dealing with line and the other who was calling one person from the same line then one person from the senior citizens line. The line crept along and after about 15 minutes, a customer with multiple transactions reached the cashier. She was still being attended to by the cashier 30 minutes later. Within that time the other cashier had handled about four customers. Then the fifth customer was called and he apparently also had several transactions because he took approximately 15 minutes as well.
The line had been at a standstill for about 20 minutes when suddenly, two women came and stood just in front of the Cashier Counter and waited for just a few minutes before they were called by the cashier. Some people in the line, which had grown quite considerably, understandably began to grumble and were informed by the women that they were MMG customers.
Seeing that they were getting immediate attention whilst I had already spent 40 minutes and there still 10 persons ahead of me in the line, I stepped up to the cashier and strenuously requested that transaction be dealt with. A security guard was summoned and a woman in the line began to express her views in a raised voice and the security guard responded.
At that point, pandemonium erupted as some other customers in the line rose to her defence and offering support. Apparently, the decibel level of the ensuing chaos reached the appropriate volume to activate senior management. Three or four supervisors/managers burst through the door blinking furiously as if awakened from deep hibernation. Just as suddenly, three of them disappeared and the remaining one, with some unintelligible mutterings and lots of arm flapping, tried to restore calm.
As if propelled by Hurricane Karen two more cashiers materialized and promptly started to improve the mobility of the line.
A few of the other people in the line shook their heads cynically, saying that what had transpired earlier is a regular occurrence.
One conclusion I have arrived at is that although paying your bills at GTT offices is an option, customers are deliberately being punished for not wishing to utilize MMG.
Best regards,
Ameer Hassan
