Skeldon High School (SHS) defeated last year’s champion Skeldon Line Path Secondary (SLPS) on first innings to be crowned the 2019 champions of the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association (UCCA) and Bharat and Family Under-17 Inter Secondary Cricket Tournament.
In the final which was played at the Crabwood Creek Ground, SHS batted first and made 154 with Raul Jabar 33and Chaitnarine Sarwan 21. Bowling for SLPS, Trevon Sookhoo bagged 7 wickets. In their turn at the crease SLPS were dismissed for 67, Voctorie Latchman top scored with 25.
Sarwan snared 7 wickets for SHS. With a lead of 87, SHS reached 42-8 declared second time around with Sarwan hitting 25. T. Leitch picked up four (4) wickets with T. Sookhoo taking 3 for a match haul of 10.
Needing 130 for a come from behind victory, SLPS were tottering at 46-6 when the game ended with V. Latchman on 25. All-rounder Sarwan returned to take four (4) more wickets for a match haul of 11 while P. Neradj grabbed 2.
The winning SHS team was presented with a cash incentive and the winning trophy from members of the Bharat family. The runners-up, SLPS also received a trophy and cash. Chaitnarine Sarwan of the SHS was named man-of-the-match for his 11 wickets and 46 runs.
Five schools participated in the competition, the others being Tagore Memorial Secondary School (TMSS), Central Corentyne Secondary School (CCSS) and Black Bush Polder Secondary (BBPS).
A number of other players were recognised for their outstanding performances during the competition. Leg Spinner Talim Khan of TMSS took 32 wickets; Trevon Sukhoo of SLPS was the best all-rounder on show taking 34 wickets with his right arm medium pace while scoring 106 runs.
Victorie Latchman scored 108, which was the first and only century in the history of the competition. The competition had the blessings of the Ministry of Education, The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the UCCA. The Competitions Committee of the UCCA ran off the competition led by its Chairman, former National wicketkeeper/batsman Sydney Jackman. (Samuel Whyte)
