Over 300 athletes are expected to take to the Lusignan Community Center Ground (LCCG) today for the commencement of the Third Annual King-Medas Pansy Adonis (KMPA) Junior Olympic Games which is set to get underway from 09:45hrs with strictly field events.
In addition to discuss, shotput, javelin and turbo javelin, the long jump and triple jump events will be contested this year for the first time in the history of the four-day competition. According to founder of the KMPA and organiser of the event; Andy Medas-King, the long jump pits were dug since last year but heavy rainfall prevented the event from being contested.
All the field events are scheduled to begin and conclude today with athletes from Under-8 to the Masters’ categories expected to be part of the action. In addition, scores of participants from Berbice and Linden will travel to the East Coast of Demerara to compete.
Following the conclusion of the field events, the day will end with the heats of the 4x100m, 4x400m and 4x800m. Tomorrow, the finals of the 1500m, 800m and 100m will speed off along with heats in the 800m and 100m hurdles, 400m and 200m.
On Saturday, the remaining sprint finals along with the hurdles will get underway. Sunday will mark the eight edition of the KMPA 5K road race classic which is scheduled to begin at Bachelor’s Adventure and finish at the LCC.
In the senior male and female, male and female under-21 and the Teachers’ Male and Female along with the Government officials’ male and female categories, there will be cash prizes awarded from 1st to 10th place finsihers.
The biggest race, the senior male 5k will carry a winning purse of $50,000, 2nd $40,000, 3rd $30,000 while the senior females will see the winner running away with $40,000, 2nd $30,000, 3rd $15,000.
In addition to cash prizes, the 1st to 10th place finishers will receive a trophy while some lucky student-athletes will receive sponsorships from the KMPA Memorial.
