Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes, and Chairman of the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), Floyd Levi announced the establishment of internet service in the community of Kumu. This is expected to happen in the first week of October the statement said.
Floyd Levi explained that in remote hinterland areas, the Ministry has established more than 60 satellite dishes, which will be the source provider of the internet service.
According the statement, a few villages outside of Lethem will receive the service from another source.
“There is a different technology. There is a tower in Lethem. That tower will be beaming the signals to Quarrie, Kumu, Moco-Moco, Hiawa and Nappi. That special technology is Long Term Evolution (LTE) and the team to perform the installation should begin their work on Monday (September 30),” explained Levi.
During the community visit, Minister Hughes and her team presented several electronic tablets to villagers. Also, she explained to the Kumu villagers about the numerous ways the internet service will benefit them in an intermediate and long-term period, the statement claimed.
She noted that with smart classrooms, students will have the ability to access teaching sessions which are taking place in Georgetown. She highlighted that telemedicine can be effective in villages including Kumu as it will save residents spending large sums of money to travel to Georgetown to meet a medical specialist.
The Telecommunications Minister noted that the internet service is small but significant in expanding the village’s tourism potential.
She added, “Tourism can make this whole village open up. Imagine, if you have a website on Kumu village, you would be able to introduce Kumu to the world. There is where people who think of coming to Lethem or coming to Guyana would know of the beautiful Kumu Falls.”
Brenrick Francis, an ambitious young leader in the community, claimed that the internet will significantly enhance the functions of the village council, schools as students will be able to access information to assist with their assignments and serve a means of promoting the village tourism product.
He noted that it will also harness the youth population of the community in terms of learning a skill in order to meaningfully contribute to their village.
“I travel every day from Kumu to Lethem to use internet. Also, with an internet hub, we can do so many things. For example, the village council would not have to send reports to Georgetown, they can now simply email it,” he further explained.
Francis has a diploma in Computer Science and would be one of the key persons working along with the Telecommunications Ministry to ensure that residents in the village council are computer literate and knowledgeable of how they can access the required information from the internet.
The Ministry has committed to rehabilitating and equipping a building, which was constructed under the previous administration to be used as an ICT hub.
Priority will be given to the health and education sectors of the village. Consequently, another service connection will be located at the village’s main benab.
The village of Kumu is a 30 minute drive from Lethem.
