DEAR EDITOR,
The National Congress of Women (NCW) Region 10 is has strongly condemning the total disrespect, unprofessional, unethical, grossly disrespectful and immature actions of several PPP protesters recently. The NCW is also demanding that a public and unequivocal apology be issued to the President. If the PPP wants the general public to lend any respect to the party they should apologies immediately.
NCW is deeply worried over the unbecoming actions of politicians. While everyone has a right to protest, the NCW believes that it must be done professionally and with great respect. NCW finds the actions of the PPP protesters, which sadly included a number of women, as being tasteless, ridiculous and evidently geared at creating public mischief. The public, especially a number of youth and women, related organisations should register their disapproval publicly of such behaviours. Guyana has no place for such behaviour,
We cannot allow such behaviours to take root in our now very peaceful society. We must recognise that such behaviours have a tendency of seeping into the culture of our country. Therefore, all right thinking Guyanese must condemn such behaviour as our young people must not be allowed to be taught such actions and behavior. NCW calls on the PPP, more so the females within the party, the official women’s arm of the party to call upon their leaders and fellow members to issue an apology as such behaviours are unbecoming in a rapidly developing country.
NCW will not stop issuing the demand for an apology and if it doesn’t come within a reasonable time, we would find other avenues to express our displeasure. The Government and its ministers should not engage any member of the PPP until the party issues a public apology so as to pressure them into recognising their actions were highly disrespectful and unwarranted.
It is pivotally important that politicians should recognise that the country is being governed by the rule of law and as it relates to the holding of elections, GECOM is legally mandated with that responsibility and as such, all sides must respect and adhere to the advice and decisions of GECOM.
The PPP is calling for an elections and they should know that there would be elections but neither them or anyone else outside of GECOM can dictate that as everything has a process that it must follow.
GECOM has disclosed the time frame that elections can be held and so we in the NCW are collectively calling on the PPP and its supporters to allow GECOM to do its work without any intimidation, pressure and threats.
Guyana is a great country under the leadership of President David Granger and we are confident of the strides and success that he has achieved since taking the reins of power in 2015. As such, we have no fear of losing an election as the record of our government is very impressive and like the PPP, we are ready to express our undying confidence of our leader President Granger.
We reiterate that the actions of the protestors were uncalled for and evidently out of place. All persons must recognise that irrespective of their views, concerns and issues that the laws should be respected and must remain decent in our conduct.
We are the leaders of today and our actions will help in culturing and carving our future leaders so we at NCW, Region 10 are appealing to all to respect the rule of law as this level of conduct and actions has no place in this society.
We therefore call for improved behaviours and to remind those guilty of this fiasco that took place recently to ensure that it is never repeated.
