On October 26th, 2019 in Trinidad and Tobago at the Central indoor Arena in Saith Park, Chaguanas, Guyana’s Queen of Boxing, Gwendolyn O’Neil, will be fighting for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Heavyweight Title. A release revealed, Fight Night Promotions with international boxing
promoter Boxu Potts are promoting this first ever female heavyweight title fight in Trinidad & Tobago. The five-time World Boxing Champion continues to be a symbol of endurance and hope for her people as she goes for her sixth world championship and perhaps the most important of her career.
The World Boxing Council is arguably the most prestigious world boxing organization and its distinctive green championship belts have been held by the likes of Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather, Laila Ali and Claressa Shields just to name a few.
Gwendolyn “Stealth Bomber” O’Neil fought for this WBC Belt twelve years ago in South Africa at the Emperors Palace, Kempton Park as a Super Middleweight against Laila Ali. Nelson Mandela who witnessed the bout said to the fighters before the fight true to his character “May the best person win”. Laila won the fight and retired never to fight again but Gwendolyn won the war and continued to fight and went on to win four more world boxing titles after her defeat in 2007. She won her first world title and became Guyana’s first female world boxing champion in 2004.
Twelve years later her opponent this time is Lorissa Rivas, a Trinidadian, who stands in the way of her redemption. Gwendolyn O’Neil had these words to say to the Guyanese people and her fans all over the world as she prepares for the fight, “Stay focused and pray for me and I will bring home the green belt (WBC) to the sweet, beautiful land of Guyana.”
She has endured and persevered against all odds and returns to the ring with a confidence unmatched in her career that can only come from experience. Gwendolyn has twenty-eight fights under her belt, meanwhile her opponent Lorissa only has twelve fights. The edge goes to O’Neil in experience but she is also twelve years older than Rivas. The real edge though is the will of the stealth bomber which she has said is the will of the tiger (Jaguar).
Born to an Amerindian mother in the Amazon pristine rain forest of Guyana she credits all her legendary strength and will to her upbringing in the jungle where she was raised. Hardwork in farming and organic food has made O’Neil ageless. The symbols remain the same as Guyana’s Coat of Arms proudly displays the Amerindian headdress, a pickaxe, jaguars and a rice stalk.
Has the Guyana Coat of Arms come to life? Go Queen for your Sixth Crown for what you sow, you may now reap.
