The 15th Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Mr. Cui Jianchun, during his remarks at the handing over of the science equipment to the lab of the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) on Thursday, said that Guyana can achieve what China has.
This statement was made in reference to three of the greatest things China has achieved in its history. Firstly, China now has the second largest economy in the world as the country contributes to the growth of the world economy by 30%.
He thinks that with a strong education sector and the rate at which Guyana’s economy will grow with oil, it will be the next rising star.
Secondly, China’s poverty elimination rate has gone through the roof as over the last few years, the country has lifted over 700 million people out of poverty, while 400 million people reached the middle income level.
“I do believe that within the next few years, Guyana also will be able to lift its people out of poverty.”
He highlighted his country’s foreign policy. The policy is said to be inclusive and promotes unity between the Chinese government and it foreign counterparts.
“This is very important especially with the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. This means that the two countries could have extensive consultations,” he said.
He said that he believes under this umbrella China and Guyana will do big things. He noted that during talks with the President, he indicated that the most important thing for his country is education. The ambassador offered his help and the conversations turn to how he can contribute to the education sector.
The focus was placed on CPCE because they knew that teachers are the base for not only the education system but also for future generations to be literate.
“The first amount of money was limited and I told the President that I have less than US$100,000 at that time. Since the budget is large, I had to ask the Chinese Government to support this programme,” Ambassador Cui noted.
From 2017 to present, they have amassed a huge number of supplies for teachers and are in the process of getting some more, as the needs at the college are many.
