Twenty-five-year-old Sophia resident Wazim Perreira, who it is alleged set his girlfriend on fire, was yesterday further remanded to prison.
It is alleged that on September 9, last, at Sophia, with intent to commit murder, Perreira unlawfully and maliciously wounded his girlfriend. The charge was read to the defendant by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
When the matter was recalled yesterday, Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers, asked for the case to be adjourned as they are still awaiting the medical report on the victim from the hospital.
He indicated that since the alleged incident took place, the victim has been hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital in a critical state. She is said to be receiving treatment for second degree burns to her face, chest, abdomen and back.
The prosecutor had objected to bail being granted to Perreira on the grounds of the serious nature of the offence and the penalty it attracts. Further objections were made by the prosecutor based on the fact that the woman is still hospitalised.
Perreira is to remain on remand until October 8, 2019, when he will make his next court appearance.
According to reports, Perreira and his girlfriend were at their home when they got into an argument. A mixture of gasoline and kerosene was reportedly thrown on the woman and she was set alight.
Neighbours, alerted by the woman’s screams, allegedly apprehended her attacker until the police arrived while the badly burnt woman was rushed to the hospital.
