Play in the fourth annual Limacol Football Tournament, part sponsored by W.J. Enterprise continued on Wednesday night at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue and it was not short of action.
Buxton Stars and Northern Rangers (on the ball) gave the litter of fans at the MOE ground much to cheer about during the six goal draw on Wednesday.
Still in the group round-robin stage, Wednesday was the final day of second round action and teams were keen to make huge impacts before the final round gets underway. In the feature clash, Buxton Stars drew 3-3 with Northern Rangers. By the end of the first half, Rangers were up 3-1 courtesy of goals from Keith Caines in the 29th minute, Akeel Pinheiro (32nd) and Anthony Sancho (42nd). Those goals were Rangers response to Jumali Major’s opener for Buxton in the 14th minute.
It was an entertaining game and first half had enough action for the both games contested on the night but the finishing touch was lacking on numerous dangerous plays by both teams. Buxton could’ve easily scored three or more goals in the first half but poor ball control and lack of proper conversion in the final third could have been their demise but they picked up the slack during the second period of play.
Both teams had to settle for a point after Buxton’s Neil Hutson (56th) and Shemar Scott (67th) cancelled the deficit for the men from the East Coast of Demerara in the match that had six different players etching their name on the score sheet.
In the opening clash, GT Panthers defeated Beacons in their group C fixture which finished 2-1. GT Panthers went ahead early in the match after Vincent Thomas made no mistake in finding the back of the net in the 7th minute.
Panthers would go on to torment Beacons backline with some menacing runs through their wingers but the Beacons’ defence remained resolute until the 85th minute when Anson Lynch doubled the lead for Panthers.
Lynch’s strike would prove vital after Rawle Adams scored a missile of a free kick in stoppage time from around 35 yards out to pull a goal back. Panthers would ensure that Beacons didn’t get another chance to equalise with one of their players feigning an injury to consume the remaining seconds of the match.
There are four groups of four teams contesting the group round-robin stage, the top two sides in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The winners of this edition will pocket $400,000, second $200,000, third $100,000 and the losers of the third place playoff will walk away with $50,000.
