A pregnant woman and her 18-month-old son are patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital Cooperation (GPHC) following Friday’s freak storm in Mahdia, Region Eight.
The woman, 27-year-old Shavani Boodoo, is said to be in a critical condition, while her 18-month old son is said to be stable.
According to family members, the woman who is seven months pregnant was in her home completing her daily chores when the storm hit the community. Her young son was also at home at the time.
Heavy winds caused the structure to collapse trapping both the woman and her child inside until they were assisted out by family members. Reports suggest that the woman was complaining of severe pains about her body after the incident.
In an interview, the woman’s husband, who works as a carpenter, said that he was on his way home from work when the storm hit the community. Heavy winds uprooted several trees blocking his path home.
According to the man, “when I reach home it was my neighbour who told me that I should go to the hospital cause the house fall pon Shavani and the lil boy. When I reach at the hospital the nurses told me that dem don send she to Georgetown.”
At the city public hospital the woman was unable to communicate with anyone as she was undergoing treatment that required that a tube be inserted down her throat. This publication understands that the woman’s left foot appears to be broken.
Meanwhile, family members said that the toddler is recovering well.
According to reports, around 16:00 hrs Friday, residents were alarmed by sudden heavy winds which left a trail of destruction. There were reports about several homes crashing down and also main access ways in the community being blocked due to fallen trees. Power lines were also damaged causing a temporary power outage.
In an interview, Director of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Colonel Kester Craig said that officials from the CDC were in the area monitoring the situation.
