The family of the Berbice sugar estate field superintendent who was killed by a canter truck that reversed and struck him off of his motor cycle on September 21st, 2018, has filed a $50M lawsuit against the driver.
Rajendranauth Singh Haralsingh called ‘Jerry’, 52 of Lot 28 Section G, Reliance Abandon, East Canje, Berbice, was killed on September 21, 2018 when Mohandass Meenkum called “Marvin” reversed motor canter GWW 1831 out of his yard onto the Betsy Ground Public Road.
In the process he crashed into Haralsingh, thus causing his death.
Meenkum has since been found guilty in the Magistrate Court by Magistrate Renita Singh and sentenced to seven months in jail.
The magistrate in her ruling had told the accused that it was his actions on the day that caused a dangerous situation by reversing on to the main road.
A post mortem examination conducted on the body gave the cause of death as shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries.
Attorney- at-law Mursalene Bacchus has filed the lawsuit on behalf of Haralsingh’s wife, Zandra Haralsingh, and other relatives.
They are claiming from the defendant damages and/or compensation in the sum of $50M dollars for negligence, among other things.
It was claimed that on the day in question, the driver who is the owner of motor canter, GWW-1831, negligently drove the vehicle on the Betsy Ground Village Main Public road, East Canje, Berbice.
The claimant and the deceased were married and lived together as husband and wife until he died.
Prior to his death, the claim said, the deceased was a strong and healthy person who worked at various places including as a superintendent at the Rose Hall Estate.
At the time of his death, he was employed as a field superintendent with Anderson Enterprise located at Rose Hall Estate, Canje, Berbice.
