A known vagrant from the town of New Amsterdam was crushed to death Wednesday night by a hire car driver.
The driver is presently in police custody while his car is impounded at the Central Police Station.
Reports are that sometime around 22:30 hrs Wednesday night the driver of HC 6742 was proceeding along the main road of St. John Streets, New Amsterdam when his vehicle came into contact with something on the roadway.
Concerned that he may have hit something, the driver stopped his car and exited, he immediately noticed that it was a person that he had just driven over.
The man was bleeding profusely from his head but was still breathing.
The driver told police that he rushed the injured man, later identified as a vagrant, to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver then ventured to the Central Police Station to report the incident and was subsequently taken into police custody. His car was also lodged. A blood alcohol level test was conducted on him and it was found that he was not under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred.
Investigations are ongoing.
