Outstanding performances from Shamal Angel, Kayambu Small, Shane Wong and Uriah Stoll saw host Young Guns of South Essequibo and Young Achievers’ Youth and Sports Club of West Berbice chalking one win each on Saturday in their three-match T20 series at the New Opportunity Corps ground at Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast.
The matches, which were organised by the host, brought the curtains down on the home team’s cricket camp which was held at Zorg and NOC grounds.
Young Guns won the opening fixture by two wickets. Young Achievers Youth and Sports Club were reduced to 26-4, batting first in scorching heat. However a 61-run fifth wicket stand between Angel and Small resurrected the innings, but their efforts could not prevent a Young Guns victory.
Young Achievers lost opener, former Guyana U19 player Kevin Sinclair lbw to Kerton Layne for one, Collis Butts caught off Imtiaaz Ally for five, Odel Miller and Daniel Milne for five each before Angel and Small staged a recovery. Angel struck five fours and one six before he was dismissed for a top score of 39, while Small hit one four and two sixes in scoring 30. Azoomah Alfred made 12 as Young Achievers managed 129-6; Layne picked up 2-13 and Ally 2-18.
In reply, Young Guns loss opener Jarrard Allicock bowled by Sinclair for six, Saeed Hack went for six and Randy Ragubeer was dismissed without scoring, however resolute batting by Stoll and Wong resurrected the chase nicely, and despite losing them both in the latter stages of the innings, Young Guns finished on 130-8.
Stoll struck six fours in a fluent 31, while Wong made 30 with two fours and a similar number of sixes. Sudra Shane chipped in with 10 as Young Guns finished on 130-8 in 20 overs. Angel took 2-31.
Young Achievers won the second encounter by nine runs. Batting first in a match which was reduced to 15 overs, Young Achiever’s loss Sinclair (11) and Angel (13) before Collis Noble steadied the innings somewhat with a patient 22 that contained two fours. His innings saw his team ending on 90-7. Avick Nandalall had 2-4, Joel Fortune 2-16 and Kurtin Layne 2-21.
Young Guns were put on the back foot early in the chase, losing four wickets for 22, but Shane Wong tried to keep his team in the hunt with a robust 29 that included three sixes. However, following his dismissal, Young Guns found it difficult to score at the required rate and were limited to 81-8. Angel claimed 3-9, Jaden Samuels 3-11 and Sinclair 2-9.
