I came across this most profound and incisive quotation many years ago and because of its deep and truth based revelation, coupled with my life long interest in politics, I have never, nor will I ever, forget it. A cursory glance at the political landscape in our beloved Guyana bears truth to this statement. Here in the United States, this statement is at the level of gospel. The embarrassment that is Donald Trump and some of his political cronies underline this statement. Yes, the poor will be with us always, be it from their lack of effort or political neglect is anyone’s guess, what is sure, fingers can and will be pointed as to reason(s) for their plight for the remainder of their lives.
But can we honestly feel comfortable in accepting that with the lawless and exorbitant exaggeration witnessed among those few individuals, that some of that wealth cannot be redistributed to improve the lot of that little child in torn garments, or holes in his/her shoes or whose mother cannot find the next meal? In good conscience, we cannot justify this glaring disparity on daily display. My question to those with more money or resources thank God is, “ When is enough, enough?” Of all the disciplines/careers, I believe politics is the one calling that can in a most profound way change the life of citizens if any country, decisions made can impact lives for the remainder of those lives and that of their children in either a positive or negative way. Even if an individual enters politics to acquire a Bentley or high priced SUV, the seaside mansion, and boat, after that, isn’t it time to look beyond one self and bring in focus those less fortunate? I will not point fingers in the context of our Guyana, but humbly appeal to those in high office both Government and Opposition and the seekers of high office to use your position to change the lives of those less fortunate for better. The voters know who you are, they may just get smart enough to remind you that they were paying attention. That brainless embarrassment Trump will soon find that out!
Respectfully,
Claudeston G. Massiah
