A man is now behind bars after he was found to be in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Steadmon Smartt appeared Friday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where his sentence was handed down by Senior Magistrate, Leron Daly.
He pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on August 22, 2019 at Lot 9 Princes Street, Georgetown, he had in his possession 16.159 kilograms of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the defendant, who was not represented by an attorney, he had “just collect it from a man and he was to come back and pick it up but I don’t know what happen.”
Police prosecutor, Sanj Singh, disclosed that on the day in question, police ranks acting on information received, went to the home of the defendant.
A search was conducted and they discovered in Smartt’s room several compressed packages containing a quantity of seeds, stems and leaves suspected of being cannabis.
Another set of packages were found in a blue barrel within the said home.
Smartt was arrested and told of the offence.
However, when he was questioned by the police, he could not give a proper explanation.
The narcotics were weighed in his presence.
He was later charged. After listening to both sides, the magistrate sentenced Smartt to serve three years and six months in prison for the offence. He was also fined $30,000.
