Dominic Gaskin, former Minister of Business, is the new Chair of the Small Business Council.
In an August 24, 2019 edition of The Official Gazette, Government announced the new board, effective from July 1, 2019 to serve for a period of one year. His appointment is in accordance with a stipulation of the Small Business Act, that the Chairperson be appointed by the Minister of Business, who is now Haimraj Rajkumar.
Gaskin, after resigning his ministerial post earlier this year, was appointed Director of Manufacturing and Marketing within the Ministry of Business with responsibility for the enforcement of standards, providing assistance to small producers and access to markets, particularly Eastern Caribbean markets.
Chief Executive Officer of the Small Business Bureau, Dr. Lowell Porter, is serving on the Commission by virtue of his post, as the law mandates the Head of the Bureau to sit on the council. Entrepreneurs Evie Kanhai-Gurcharan and Dason Anthony were appointed to serve as members, as well.
The other members of the Council will be drawn, one from each of the following institutions: Ministry of Business, Ministry of Finance, Linden Chamber of Commerce, West Berbice Chamber of Commerce, Essequibo Chamber of Commerce, Institute of Private Enterprise Development, Guyana Bankers’ Association, and the Region 3 Chamber of Commerce.
A representative of a Youth Organisation is also expected to serve as an Observer.
