The National Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday handed over a cheque worth $3.6 million to the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) to aid in their participation at next month’s NAPF Pan American Powerlifting and FESUPO South American Classic Powerlifting Championship.

Director of Sport Christopher Jones presented the cheque to Treasurer of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation, Colin Austin in the presence of President Ed Caesar at the NSC office, Homestretch Avenue. Also attending was Public Relations Officer and athlete, Runita White. Jones encouraged the athletes to put their best foot forward in their quest to medal and wished them well. He also stated that the powerlifters have traditionally done the nation proud on the international platform and the government is happy to play a role in their success.
Caesar said they are happy for the support and expressed gratitude to Jones for his input. The athletes that will represent Guyana are, Franklyn Brisport, Noel Cummings, Lisa Oudit, Natoya Robinson, Nairanjan Singh, Nadina Taharally, Frank Tucker, Runita White and Bjorn Williams. The officials are Colin Andrews, Erwyn Smith and Gordon Spencer while the Team Physiotherapist is Kathleen Paul.
The team will depart on September 15th and return on September 23rd and 24th, respectively. Guyana won medals at this competition in 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil and 2017 in Miami, Florida. The championship will be held from September 17-22 at Argentino Hotel in Piriapolis, Uruguay.
Meanwhile, the GAPLF has released the names of the athletes who will be battling this Sunday at the federation’s 2019 Raw National set to take place at the Saint Stanislaus College, Auditorium, Brickdam, Georgetown.
Lift off time is 10:00hrs with weigh-in set to start at 08:00hrs and will end at 09:30hrs.
Flight ‘A’ athletes are: Shelly Ann Gomes, Davendra Sookdeo, Navindra Tamasar, Romario Gonsalves, Christopher Sookdeo, Jermy Indarjit, Akram Gaffor, Chitra John, Ameera Wajidally, Esther Maycock, Vijai Rahim, Timothy Bagla, Dwayne Welch, Jamal Bently.
Flight ‘B’ – Roger Rogers, Arjun Roopnarine, Donnel Perry, Jeremy Smith, Wazim Mohamed, Matthew Maycock, Farouk Abdool, Hardat Tarson, Ramzam Mohamed, Marlon Wilson, Nigil Phillips, John Edwards.
