Some forty-five Westside primary school students were the recipients of sizeable ‘back to school’ ackages from the local leg of the Daphney Foundation, when the organization held its annual ‘Back to School’ outreach initiative at the Malgre Tout Primary School, yesterday.
Students received school uniforms, backpacks, exercise books, pencils, crayons and other items when they gathered for the much anticipated event, which was attended by several parents as well.
The Daphney Foundation was established in 2014 and is celebrating its sixth year in existence. The foundation is the brainchild of Desiree Harry-McPherson who is the daughter of Daphney Harry.
Ms Daphney Harry biologically mothered seven children, but equally cared for dozens of other underprivileged and less fortunate children in her community of Malgre Tout, West Bank Demerara.
The foundation caters for underprivileged children of Malgre Tout Primary School, Grade 1-6 throughout each school year.
Yesterday students, and in many cases parents, were overjoyed at the gesture, since several mothers noted that it was extremely difficult to come up with all the items needed for their kids as dictated by the school’s curriculum.
Students and parents alike were also treated to a scrumptious lunch before the event completed.
Speaking at the venture, son of the deceased, Gervy Harry, thanked all the attendees for being present, nothing that the family will do all it can to make a difference each year in the lives of the needy and underprivileged.
He said that it warms the hearts of the family to see satisfied smiles on the faces of the students as they received their packages with much enthusiasm and excitement.
Daughter, Desiree Harry- Mc Pherson was appreciative to all the supporters and overseas sponsors for contributing, citing that without their efforts the annual programme could not become a reality.
She said after their mother passed away she felt the need to continue her legacy and therefore with other relatives decided to form the foundation which has been doing well for the past six years. She said while their geographical locations (overseas) did not allow them to create the ‘foster mother’ scenario for children, they however try to keep the cause alive by conducting the yearly student outreach initiative.
