The National Sports Commission (NSC) annual swim camp concluded yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre, Lilliendaal, East Coast, Demerara.
This year’s edition saw some 575 participants being taught the basics of swimming including streamline, kicking, blowing bubbles, how to float and the various strokes; freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Director of Sport Christopher Jones said that this is a long term investment and the programme is geared to identify Guyana’s best talent in swimming. “Like in every sport, in order for it to continue to grow we have to identify the new talent and it has to start at the grassroots levels.”
He urged the parents to get their children involved in sports. “We have seen the largest ever participation at the programme and we are working with the outlying regions to access those schools so the children will have the opportunity to represent Guyana.” He thanked the parents and congratulated the participants.
In an invited comment Coach Paul Mahaica said he is pleased with the turnout which has been the largest to date. He added that some of the students learned how to swim, while others were given the much needed exposure which can help them to improve their performances in the pool. Mahaica said the students were eager to swim and a large number of them showed an interest in moving forward into to clubs so that they can compete. He stated that they are looking forward to expand the camp, adding that in the land of many waters everybody should know to swim; he thanked the NSC.
