Recently, there has been talk of “free university education” to be paid for by the Guyanese taxpayer. This slogan “Free Education” dates its origin from the Socialist times of Dr Jagan and Mr Burnham.
These leaders quietly modified their positions when they realized that (1) 85% of the UG graduates emigrate shortly after graduation taking with them the monies spent on them by the Guyanese taxpayers and giving it over to foreign countries. (2) No country has free University Education, even the richest ones like the USA and the UK, and when they give aid assistance to Guyana, they will scale it down to deduct the “Free Education” money, not only because it is not spent for Guyana’s benefit but for other countries.
(3) No completely government-funded university has ever had a high standard and UG itself when it was non-fee-paying had lower standards than today. The staff got a better wage only when fees were reinstituted. (4) A fully government-funded university inevitably attracts political interference.
Don’t be bowled over by this slogan: the richest countries in the world never had free university education for very good reasons. Only fools go where angels fear to tread.
Yours sincerely
Paul Validum Ramlochan
