The much anticipated Winfield Braithwaite Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Championships is set to get going from tomorrow to Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) with the action on each evening scheduled to commence at 18:00hrs.
GBA President Steve Ninvalle is presented with the sponsorship cheque by Admin Manager Allan McCullock yesterday at Cevon’s Waste Disposal at their Office in South Ruimveldt Gardens.
Yesterday at their Head Office in South Ruimveldt Gardens, Cevon’s Waste Management became the latest Sponsor to come on board when their Administration Manager Allana McCullock presented a cheque to the President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle.
Team Guyana, which will led by Isaiah Moore, the 18-year-old son of retired Professional Boxer Leon ‘Hurry up’ Moore, has won the Championships for the past three years and will be keen to retain Championship honours in the fourth edition here which is being held for the first time at the Sports Hall, the home of Boxing in Guyana.
McCullock said Sports is a very important aspect to her Company.
“We want to ensure that we contribute not only to Boxing but Sports in general since it’s important to encourage youths to participate in sports as a part of our Community development plans,” McCullock explained.
McCullock promised Ninvalle continued support for boxing as Cevon’s fulfils their mandate as a good Cooperate Citizen.
Ninvalle thanked Cevon’s for their support and hoped that this partnership will remain strong and last for a long time.
The GBA Head disclosed that a 20-member squad, which includes two females, has been selected, but added some other Boxers who are not a part of the Guyana team, will have the opportunity and exposure of showing off their skills in an International atmosphere.
“Seven Countries will participate with Trinidad and Tobago bringing the largest contingent. The young Boxers should have benefitted from weekend encampments which began on June 14,” Ninvalle said.
The GBA President informed that next year the USA, Venezuela and Colombia should be participating.
According to Ninvalle, Venezuela and Colombia wanted to come this year but because of the economic conditions in their Countries they could not make the trip.
“We have renamed this tournament, which was previously called the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing Tournament after Winfield Braithwaite who is one of Guyana’s better Amateur fighters and the only one with a Commonwealth Medal; So any Country can participate,” Ninvalle.
Experienced Boxing Coach Lennox Daniels, one of three Coaches taking the youths through their paces during their Camp, has been appointed Manager.
Sebert Blake is the Head Coach, while Clive Atwell, who is making his debut as Guyana Coach, is Blake’s assistant.
