Police in ‘B’ Division have not yet arrested anyone in relation to the armed robbery that took place at Port Mourant Sunday night; however, a senior police source told Kaieteur News that they are actively pursuing a lead into the matter.
The source stated, “We have received some information that one of the perpetrators was reportedly recently released from prison and as such we are working on that”.
The recently released man lives a street away from the victims and was freed on a murder charge recently at the High Court, this publication was reliably informed.
On Sunday at just around 21:30 hrs, three armed men with a gun and two cutlasses invaded the home of Indira Samaroo, 50, and Harvey Durgana, 44, and Shahid Durgana, 18, at Lot 227 Ankerville, Port Mourant.
Samaroo was broadsided with a cutlass about her body, head and punched in the right eye while her husband sustained three wounds, one to the forehead, two to the top of his head compounded with several kicks to his stomach and about his body during the 20-minute long ordeal.
Their son, Shahid was punched to the left eye and broadsided on his head.
According to Nadira Samaroo, the sister of Samaroo, when the men arrived, they took her relatives into the house in the bottom flat where a grocery shop is located and brutalised them while they demanded $4M.
“They come and demand $4M but my sister kept telling them that they don’t have all that money,” she said.
The woman stated that the men then ransacked the entire home and took three cellphones, one tablet, two watches and an undisclosed amount of cash but before they left, they told the victims to “hug each other and tell dem y’all love dem” and then locked them in the toilet.
Although strange, the victims said they believed that they were going to be killed; however, the men escaped with the loot.
Kaieteur News understands that the police arrived nearly 30 minutes after the ordeal. A relative stated that “when they came, they were intoxicated, and we told them that the bandits took the car keys and that the victims need to go to the hospital but they didn’t take them in the vehicle to the hospital. They just took a report and left”.
Nadira Samaroo however stated that Officer in Charge of the sub-division visited yesterday morning and promised to look into the matter.
Investigations are ongoing.
