Today, the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground in the Mining town of Linden in Region 10 will be transformed into an atmosphere of high intensity Athletic action and a day of fun and frolic for the entire family when the now rebranded Jefford Track and Field Classic X gets going from high noon.
This meet is coordinated in accordance with International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Rules and is sanctioned by the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).
Although no overseas Athletes will participate, the cream-of-the-crop of local athletes are expected to be on show at the event and since it is the 10th edition of the event, there will be, “10 big surprise gate prizes for patrons.”
This event has hosted several of the region’s most popular athletes in Guyana since 2010, including Aliann Pompey competing for the first time in Guyana at the Second Edition in 2011 and Marian Burnett a year later. Every notable Guyanese athlete has competed at the Classic with most holding meet records, including Brenessa Thompson and Winston George.
All 28 Events scheduled for the day, will carry a total purse of $160,000 for both male and female categories with $40,000 going to the winner, $25,000 second place and $15,000 for third place. Memorabilia medals will accompany each cash prize. The top three finishers in the school boys and girls 150m will take home Hampers and medals.
A total of $2million will be given directly to the athletes, while 10 gate prizes will be handed out to patrons and 10 of Guyana’s biggest entertainers are scheduled to perform in what is dubbed a ‘Celebration of 10 years of Athletics excellence in Guyana’.
Organiser Edison Jefford, who started this meet in memory his last Father who was a top Athlete in the late 1970s and early 80s, speaking to Kaieteur Sports yesterday afternoon, informed that the ground was in excellent condition despite brief mid-afternoon showers for past three days, was being marked for today mega Event.
Jefford, a former Sports Journalist, informed that some of the Country’s top Athletes will be on show including Alita Moore, who has signaled her intentions of winning the Champion Athlete prize.
“The Champion Athlete gets a $25,000 cash prise and $25,000 Voucher from Under Amor compliments of MVP Sports in the Giftland Mall. Police is coming with a full complement of 37 Athletes, four from New Amsterdam and West Coast Berbice and of course the best Athletes from here in Linden like Daniel Williams, who is expected to compete among several others from the Linden Community,” Jefford disclosed.
“I think we will have a good day given the $2 Million Cash prise up for grabs. The Athletes are excited about that and ready go,” concluded Jefford.
DJs Selector Primo, Selector Face, P star Penny from T&T, Akelo, Gully Ras and LT One Man Band will be in the House, while Natural Aroma from Berbice and Movements Sound and DJ Kes X Spotlight from Linden will keep what is anticipated to be a massive crowd rocking well into tomorrow morning in the after Event Party.
