A woman who lived alone at a house in Rose Hall Town is currently homeless after the building she stayed in was gutted following a fire Wednesday night.
Bhagwantie Peters, 54, of Lot 13 Sabsook Street, Rose Hall Town told reporters that she lit a mosquito coil by her bedside and left the room for a few minutes unattended. That was when the inferno that completely destroyed the building started.
Kaieteur News understands that the blaze began at approximately 20:00 hrs Wednesday. Peters said after she left her room, within minutes she saw the bed on fire. She ran over to her neighbour for help. By that time the entire bottom flat of the building was consumed with the flames.
The fire service located in the same town (minutes away) arrived when the building was already completely destroyed. There was trouble getting water to quell the blaze.
Peters told reporters that she does not own the building, that the owners are some persons living overseas. She is now without a place to stay and lost all her belongings in the fire.
The building was fully furnished with two bedrooms in the upper flat, a room in which Peters stayed in the lower flat, and the kitchen.
Anyone willing to assist Peters to get back on her feet can make contact with her on 337-4699. The woman is also unemployed since she suffers from an illness that prevents her from working.
