The One N Move Boxing and Comedy Jam on Saturday August 3 at the old Rice Field Tarmac at Vergenoegen East Bank Essequibo, the fight night, were hosted by Slingers sound system and Polar beer and the Vergenoegen Boxing Gym.
Twelve bouts were held on the night’s Card and there were Gyms from the Siparuta Village in the Corentyne River and it was the first time the Village had ever had Boxers coming from that Community.
Jeffrey Joseph, who won by a walk over and got the Gold Medal, while the other fighter, Ray Johnson, got runner up spot and earned a Silver Medal.
The Boxers was accompanied by their PRO, Manager Aaron Lochan and Hinterland Boxing Coach Orlon Pocket Rocket Rogers.
“It was a great experience for both young men who represented their village in Boxing for the first time, both of them are footballers but through Minister Dr George Norton’s Hinterland and Riverrain Programmes they got involved in Boxing along with others,” their Coach told Kaieteur Sports on Monday.
The pair, who also paid a visit to this Newspaper Office on Saffon Street, informed that they are not turning back.
They thanked Minister Norton for the work he is doing and Coach Pocket Rocket Rogers, who they said is very dedicated to the sport.
Coach Rogers has been going to Hinterland and Riverrain areas to spot talent in young boys and girls and the Boxers said they are willing to come out and compete with others so the name of Siparuta can be called as a little Mexico in Guyana.
“It was so great to see youths enter the square jungle after just17 plus days of intense training. There are only two Sports in the World that Amerindian are good in is Football and Boxing there are doing well in other sports but those two are the sports they are dominant in,” Coach Rogers opined.
