Guyana’s Under-15 Junior Jaguars rallied for a comprehensive 5-1 win over the Bahamas yesterday morning, rebounding in style from the disappointing 0-3 loss to Nicaragua on Monday last when the 2019 Concacaf Boys’ Under-15 Championship continued at the IMG Academy, Bradenton, Florida, USA.
Five Jaguars roared to goals of their own as the Guyanese dominated their Bahamian counterparts, the closest the Bahamas came to the Guyanese was when they equalized the score at 1-1 but thereafter, it was the Junior Jaguars who controlled activities in the park.
Scoring for Guyana were Antwone Vasconcellos 7th minute, Brandon Solomon 12th minute, Colin Henriques 20th minute, Kevin Mullin 42nd (penalty) and Daniel Lowe also from the penalty spot in the 51st minute.
Jordin Wilson netted the Bahamas’ consolation goal in the 8th minute.
In the other Group E match, the Cayman Islands and Nicaragua played to a 0-0 draw at the same venue.
Head Coach of the Guyana team Brian ‘Joe Boy’ Joseph commented on the showing of his charges, stating that following their loss to Nicaragua a meeting was held where they reflected on what was not done and what would be done going forward.
“We kind of came to an agreement that as much as we could we would try to implement our style of play for today’s (yesterday’s) game against the Bahamas. We stuck to that task and as a result we won the game. We dominated possession which is what we worked on and that managed to bring us that good result.”
Players were rotated as per tournament regulations which states that every player must have at least 60 minutes of playing time during the tournament, Joseph reported.
“So we would have made a couple of changes, one being we started with Hernandez in goal, Devon Padmore came in for Tyquan Brummell, Padmore moving to right bank and Solomon to left back. We would have also used Marcus Tudor in space of Shoran James; Shoran is carrying a little knock and need some more time to recover. I thought we stuck to the task very well.”
Coach Joseph expressed delight at being able to score five goals: “Looking forward we will recover and prepare for our final group game against Cayman Islands on Thursday. We’ve looked at Cayman. I think it’s going to be a more difficult game for us but I believe it’s definitely a game that we will come out with three points once we stick to our playing philosophy, once we stick to working hard and making the simpler and correct decisions when we’re in and out of possession.”
Guyana’s Starting XI – 1. Shavid Hernandez (GK), 2. Zakeel Flatts, 3. Romel Medas, 4. Devon Padmore, 5. Brandon Solomon, 6. Rajan Ramdeholl (C), 7. Kevin Mullin, 8. Marcus Tudor, 9. Antwone Vasconcellos, 10. Samuel Garnett, 11. Colin Henriques.
