Latchman Chetram, 26, of 105, Bel Vue, West Bank Demerara, is accusing police from two West Bank Demerara Police Stations of colluding with a popular businessman to obstruct justice after he was reportedly beaten about the body by the man with a cutlass recently.
Chetram told this newspaper that the daughter of his attacker has a serious crush on him and has been peddling stories about the two of them being together.
He said he is not attracted to the girl and upon telling her this, she began claiming that he was harassing her.
He said this information must have gotten to the businessman’s hearing, which would have prompted the attack on his person. Chetram related that on Monday night, he came home after consuming alcohol and began venting his disgust over what the young girl had allegedly done.
The young man said on Tuesday, he returned home from his job at Banks DIH, Thirst Park, and was walking in a side street that led to his home when the man attacked him.
He said that the man began to lash him about the body viciously with a cutlass although he begged for mercy. He said that the man then instructed him to get on his knees and beg for mercy, to which he complied.
He said when he thought this course of action would have quelled the man’s anger, it instead proved otherwise as the man began to hit him in his face with the fist.
He said when he managed to escape from the man and ran home, he was told by his parents that, the businessman had been to the home and was ranting, insinuating that he has a licensed firearm and that the young boy will soon disappear.
Chetram said on Tuesday evening, they reported the matter to the Wales Police Station and officers there took photographs of the injuries, which he received as a result of the beating.
He said that they promised to arrest the attacker. He said, however, that later in the day, the matter was then transferred to the La Grange Police Station, where ranks there took a statement from him and placed him to wait on a bench for hours with claims that they were making contact with his attacker.
He said that he was made to wait for over five hours and still his attacker did not show up. He said police ranks told him to return at 5:00 pm the same day, so that they could have a confrontation between the two men to see if they can come to an amicable settlement.
Chetram said his attacker never showed up, and he was again asked to visit the La Grange Police Station, the next day. Still his attacker was a no show. He said he however overheard a rank there in conversation with his attacker more than once on his cellular phone, and it was also the said rank who kept suggesting to him that he and the businessman meet and trash out their issues.
The injured man who suffered abrasions about the body is angry that the police will try to influence him to settle a matter against his wishes. He is accusing ranks of being in collusion with the businessman to write off the matter.
He said his attacker is very wealthy and is known to settle matter by way of cash whenever he creates a problem in the village.
Up to press time yesterday, the La Grange Police Station had still not made contact with the young man, according to his parents.
Chetram’s mother reported that the businessman has been boasting in the village that ‘he is a boss’, hinting that they can take the matter to court if they wished.
When the La Grange Police Station was contacted yesterday, a male rank said he was not at liberty to speak on the matter but directed the call to a senior male rank who was very rude. He retorted that the police needed to be left to deal with matters that needed time to be dealt with.
When the rank was asked if the businessman has been contacted or arrested, he bluntly refused to comment on the matter, saying such information is confidential.
